Situated on a steep hill overlooking a small lake, this home was featured in Minneapolis/St. Paul magazine of September/October 1999. A hipped roof tops the earthy, low lines of the stucco and shingle prairie exterior. Rooms are arranged to provide views through the trees to the lake allowing generous southeast light to pour in. The dining room windows frame a tranquil fishpond and garden.
The home’s floor plan allows for entertaining many guests yet also creates special, private spaces. A generous kitchen surrounds a large granite-topped island, while a nearby built-in desk provides space for letter writing and cookbooks. The adjoining living and dining rooms are anchored by an island fireplace of granite and stucco.
A sleek, intimate circular bar and a sunlit library adjoin a large family room on the lower floor. Tucked quietly away are a guest bedroom and bath, and a space in which the homeowner can indulge his hobby of growing orchids. This “Orchid Room” was designed to his specification with special wall finishes, ventilation, and lighting.
